Professional photography pricing insights

Having a fancy camera does not make someone a professional photographer

When you hire a photographer of sound reputation, you are hiring an expert. Someone that knows that they must always reinvest in their business to create the reputation of being top notch. Some photographers are in demand because of their low price. These "casual" photographers undervalue the industry because they do not have the experience or expertise. More often than not, they neglect to factor in the costs of business, employees, equipment, software, back ups, etc. and soon go out of business. Being in demand for awesome photography, great customer service and top notch quality products takes years and years on the photographer’s part. Cameras don't take awesome pictures by themselves any more than fancy pots and pans cook fabulous meals on their own!

Comparing price for professional photography

Every industry that builds products to sell, has an MSRP (Manufactures Suggested Retail Price) that is put out to set a standard from the manufacturer. If you have priced a car, the MSRP is the same regardless of where you go. If you buy a toaster, television or anything retail, there is an MSRP. There is no MSRP in professional photography. We all know you can go to the local drug store and pay a $1.99 for a print. But much of the cost of a photographic print produced by a professional photographer has a lot more to do with the time, equipment costs, years of training, the growing costs of running a legitimate business and finally; the expertise and reputation of the photographer. No one wants to pay too much for anything so when you see a price that seems to good to be true, it probably is. For a portrait as important as your family portrait, remember; the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price wears off.

There is no substitute for experience

When you do something for a long time, you get good at it. Christine and I have been blessed to have been helping families remember their most important family milestones through our photography for nearly 30 years. You don't stay in business that long without doing something right. There simply is no substitute for experience!
